AGE Research Group team member wins prestigious Vivensa Academy Rising Star award
AGE Research Group member Dr Claire McDonald, who was recently appointed as Clinical Senior Lecturer by Newcastle University, has won a Vivensa Academy Rising Star Excellence award.
This prestigious and highly competitive award is given annually to a rising star within the UK ageing research community and comes with £40,000 per year funding for three years to accelerate the research programme of the recipient. The award is funded by the Vivensa Foundation, a leading health research funder with a mission to improve the health, wellbeing and quality of life for older people.
Dr McDonald’s research, based in the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre, focusses on translational geroscience, taking discoveries in ageing biology and applying them to human studies to prevent and treat age-related conditions including sarcopenia and multiple long-term conditions. Dr McDonald’s work spans experimental medicine studies and early-phase clinical trials through to large, late phase trials. Her work as regional ageing research lead for the NIHR Research Delivery Network is leading efforts to build the capacity to deliver ageing research at scale within the NorthEast of England, and her national work with the MLTC cross-NIHR collaboration (CNC) contributes to efforts to find better ways to prevent and treat MLTC.
Speaking after the announcement at the Vivensa Academy annual symposium in London on 23rd April, Dr McDonald said:
“I am delighted to receive this award from the Vivensa Foundation, which is a vote of confidence in our work here in Newcastle and a testament to the support I have received from the AGE Research Group and others over the last few years. This award will help drive forward our work within the group and the BRC to discover and test new and better treatments for age-related conditions and improve care, not just for older people, but for everyone who lives with, or is at risk of developing, multiple long-term conditions, whatever their age.”
