About Jonny

Jonny is a Geriatric Medicine Registrar with a primary research focus on characterising the epidemiology of multiple long-term conditions among older people in hospital settings. This work is part of the ADMISSION Research Collaborative, and forms the main focus of his thesis. He has a strong interest in medical education and serves on the committee of the Association for Elderly Medical Education , where he promotes research careers in geriatric medicine.

About the Project

Jonny's PhD combines routine hospital data from Newcastle-upon-Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and a deeply phenotyped cohort (MASS Lifecourse) to improve the characterisation of MLTC among older people who access hospital care. His published scoping review highlights the limited focus and inconsistency in how MLTC has been defined in hospital-based populations (Approaches to characterising multimorbidity in older people accessing hospital care: a scoping review | European Geriatric Medicine).

Why a PhD with AGE?

“I’ve always enjoyed research, with my intercalated degree during medical school fostering that interest. I moved to Newcastle in 2020 to pursue both clinical and research opportunities, knowing it was a centre of excellence for ageing research. The AGE Research Group has provided fantastic support, and I’d highly recommend the group to anyone interested in a research career. After submitting my thesis, I plan to apply for a Clinical Lecturer post to continue my academic development.”
