Professor Miles Witham Appointed NIHR Senior Investigator

Congratulations to Professor Miles Witham, co-lead of the AGE Research Group, who has been appointed as a Senior Investigator by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).

Miles is one of forty-three leaders in health and social care research from across the UK who have been newly appointed as NIHR Senior Investigators in 2026. They join a College of approximately 200 active NIHR Senior Investigators who are recognised for their exceptional leadership, high‑impact research, and commitment to improving health and social care.

Miles’ award is a significant achievement and reflects his reputation as a leading expert in clinical trials for older people.  The award also recognises his important contributions to building partnerships, fostering collaborations and supporting research capacity development across NIHR infrastructure via his different leadership roles.  These include co-leadership of the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre’s Ageing, Sarcopenia and Multimorbidity Theme and the Interventions and Prevention Workstream within the MLTC Cross-NIHR Collaboration and his role as co-director of the NIHR Newcastle Clinical Research Facility.

Everyone in the AGE Research Group is very proud of Miles’ well-deserved achievement. We look forward to continuing to benefit from his leadership and expertise as we work together to improve lives through world-class research in ageing, sarcopenia and multiple long-term conditions.
