Dr Sophia Amenyah visits AGE Research Group

The AGE Research Group were delighted to host Dr Sophia Amenyah, Vice Chancellor’s Fellow and Assistant Professor in Nutrition at Northumbria University on 13th May for a seminar held jointly with the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre and the Faculty of Medical Sciences Long-term Conditions and Multimorbidity Theme.

 Sophia’s interdisciplinary approach to research draws on her expertise in nutrition, genomics and social science., Her seminar presented an overview of her work to co-produce interventions with older people from ethnically marginalised and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. Sophia’s vision – to embed her research within communities and co-produce interventions to improve nutrition and wellbeing – provided inspiring examples of how to deliver genuinely inclusive research. Sophia’s reflections on the personal joys and challenges of her research journey  also stimulated much discussion with the audience and nicely illustrated how interdisciplinary research can be rewarding and impactful but does not always fit easily within established academic structures.

 The work that Sophia outlined resonated with the audience and is closely aligned with the focus on inclusivity and interdisciplinary working in the AGE Research Group and the NIHR Newcastle BRC. We look forward to hearing more as Sophia’s research develops and exploring opportunities for future collaboration!
